Banbridge Academy 1st XI travel to Cork to compete in the 37th All-Ireland Schools’ Championships

Banbridge Academy 1st XI travel to Cork on Tuesday to compete in the 37th All-Ireland Schools’ Championships, hosted this year by Bandon Grammar.

With a squad which contains boys who had success in this competition just two years ago, anticipation is high as Simon Jess’ army travel to Middleton, Ashton and then Garryduff to try and get out of a difficult group which also contains the Dublin powerhouse of Wesley College.

The squad have had inconsistent performances this season so far, but they know they are capable of going all the way if they can produce their best when it matters.  Under the captaincy of the experienced Ulster and Ireland U18 goalkeeper Luke Roleston, the team has a solid foundation on which to build.  In fact they have no fears in the goalkeeping department as Ulster U16 captain Scott Dale would walk into most sides at this tournament but he has had to make do with a seat on the bench for most of the season.

The outfield defence has been rocked by injury to influential player Charlie Norris, who damaged his hamstring against Friends’ last week ruling him out for four weeks.  Ulster U16 player Edward Rowe will shoulder more responsibility as he tries to follow in the footsteps of his illustrious brother and former captain Jake.  The midfield will rely on the workmanship of Harry Lockhart and the guile of All-Ireland winner Joel Reid.  Ulster U18 forward Mark Barlow will lead the way up front, hoping he can be supported by Philip Campbell and Ulster U16 striker Chris Curry.

Matches begin against Ulster rivals Bangor Grammar, followed by the double header against the unknown quantity King’s Hospital and then Wesley College.  The semi-finals are scheduled for Friday morning with the final on Friday afternoon at 2:30pm at Garryduff.

The full squad for the tournament is:

Luke Roleston, Scott Dale, Edward Rowe, Callum Gibson, Ryan Simms, Harry Lockhart, Luke McConnell, Joel Reid, Alex Jordan, Philip Campbell, Chris Curry, Mark Barlow, Mark Cowan, Lewis Bingham, Jack Montgomery, Mark McCullough
