Outstanding success for Academy athletes at the ABC Awards Ceremony

The Annual City of Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Junior Sports Awards took place on Friday 27 September 2019, with Special Guest Lady Mary Peters. Following a wonderful year of sporting success for the Academy in a vast array of sports a large number of athletes were successfully shortlisted for these prestigious awards.

WINNERS: Boys’ Hockey U14 Team and their coach Mark Cordner – WINNERS of the Junior School Team of the Year and School Coach of the Year. The U14 Boys’ Hockey Team, had an outstanding season, winning the Ulster Schools’ Ferris Cup and for the first time in the School’s history the John Waring All-Ireland Under 14 Schoolboy Championships.

SHORTLISTED: Under 15 Girls’ Table Tennis Team – Youth School Team of the Year – Ulster and Irish U15 Champions.

Ellen Reid – Youth Female of the Year – Irish U18 Hockey v England (3 Match series), Irish U21 v GB U23 (3 Match series), Ulster U18 (winners of the UK School Games) & Ulster U18 at the Irish Interprovincial Tournament. Ellen also scored the winning goal in the Belfast telegraph Ulster Schools’ Cup Hockey Final and helped the Academy 1st XI to finish 2nd in the Kate Russell Irish Tournament. Girls Hockey 1st XI and their coach Neil Madeley – Youth School Team of the Year and School Coach of the Year – The Academy 1st XI Girls’ Hockey Team won the Belfast Telegraph Ulster Schools’ Cup, were runners-up in the Ulster Superleague and 2nd in Ireland at the Kate Russell Tournament.

Girls’ Intermediate Cross-Country Team – Youth School Team of the Year – for the first time in the history of the Academy won the Ulster Title and also won Silver at the Irish Schools’ Cross Country Championships.

Bethany Nixon – Youth Female of the Year – won the Ulster Schools’ cross-country and was part of the team that were crowned Ulster Champions at Intermediate level and won the Intermediate Team Silver at the Irish Schools’ Cross Country, Bethany finished 14th overall. On the track won Gold at the Ulster Schools’ Championships in the Intermediate 3000m and finished 4th at the Irish Schools’ Championships and 5th at the UK School games in the 1500m Steeple Chase. Bethany was also selected to represent Ulster Schools’ at the Interprovincial Championships. 

Tommy Dobson – Junior Male of the Year – Ulster U16 Hockey Team – Leinster Series, Scotland Series and Wales Series. UK Lions Australia, Spain Series, European Rotterdam Cup and Repton Cup. Tommy was an integral player for the Academy Boys’ Hockey U14 Team who won the Ulster Schools’ Ferris Cup and for the first time in the School’s history the John Waring All-Ireland Under 14 Schoolboy Championships.
