Banbridge Academy cross country report

On the XX January Banbridge Academy Cross country athletes attended the District Schools Cross Country Championship, held at the Billy Neil Playing Fields. Despite dry weather on the day, overnight rain created a muddy and difficult course. 21 Students from Year 8 to Intermediate level represented the school with distinction, demonstrating resilience and determination against tough competition from across the district.
Two athletes shone brightly with fantastic 2nd place finishes: Emma Rankin in the Minor Girls’ race and Emma Stewart in the Intermediate Girls’ competition. Other notable top 20 performances included Jack Douglas (13th, Intermediate Boys), Beth Morrow (14th, Intermediate Girls), and Katie Coffey (18th, Intermediate Girls). These results contributed to a strong team showing, particularly in the Intermediate Girls’ category.
The Intermediate Girls’ team’s combined efforts earned them a well-deserved 3rd place overall, securing their qualification for the Ulster Schools’. Jack Douglas and Emma Rankin also secured an individual places at the Ulster Schools Championship
The Ulster Schools Championships was held on 19th February at Mallusk Playing Fields in County Antrim. Despite dry conditions, competitors faced challenges from exposed winds and boggy ground underfoot.
Remarkably, Emma Rankin secured an impressive 7th place overall, qualifying for the upcoming Irish Schools Championship. Her performance stands out among a field of dedicated athletes.
The academy’s intermediate team also made their mark again, finishing 4th in the team standings. Emma Stewart led the team with a fantastic 4th place finish individually, earning her spot at the Irish Schools Cross Country Championship as well. Teammates Katie Coffey, Beth Morrow, and Hannah Topping contributed to this strong performance.
Jack Douglas also showed great determination, finishing in the top 45 against a highly competitive field.
The school extends its congratulations to all the participants, celebrating their achievements and hard work. The outstanding performances at the Ulster Schools Championships are a testament to the dedication of the student athletes.
