Banbridge Academy’s Remembrance Assemblies

Banbridge Academy’s Remembrance Assemblies this week were conducted with the utmost dignity and solemn respect, marking a significant occasion in the school’s annual calendar. The ceremonies were attended by a representative from 502 (Ulster) Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force, based at Aldergrove, whose presence added a formal and meaningful military connection to proceedings. The events were further supported by Banbridge Academy’s own Army Cadet Force contingent, alongside representatives from the wider Royal Air Force Air Cadets and lead Sea Cadet, symbolising unity across the three Services. The order of service, thoughtfully arranged by Mr McLoughlin, featured contributions from guest Mr John Mathers, Chair of the Board of Governors and members of the school’s senior leadership team, all of whom demonstrated great reverence and composure throughout. The poignant tones of The Last Post were beautifully performed by members of the school orchestra, capturing the spirit of remembrance with precision and emotion. This was followed by a moving solo on the bagpipes—The Battle’s O’er—performed by Katherine Graham, whose playing provided a stirring accompaniment as the cadets were ceremonially piped out of the assembly hall to conduct the wreath-laying at the front of the Academy. The occasion was supported wholeheartedly by staff and observed with impeccable respect by the entire pupil body, reinforcing the school’s enduring commitment to honouring those who served and sacrificed in the pursuit of peace and freedom. The pupils each received a Challenge coin from the RAF representative and the school was presented with a framed image of the famous Vampire aircraft so heavily associated with 502 as a token of their respect for Banbridge Academy and their few who gave their tomorrow for our today.
