Thrilling Penalty Shootout Victory Over Methody Secures Successive Title

Banbridge Academy’s under-14 girls’ hockey team successfully defended their Ulster Hockey Junior Cup title yesterday, triumphing in a dramatic final against Methodist College Belfast (Methody). The two sides had previously met earlier in the season, with Banbridge overcoming Methody in the Stevenson Cup final, setting the stage for another fiercely contested encounter.

The match began with Methody establishing their intent early on but the Academy literally battled their way into the fierce contest and Annie Emerson gave them the lead in the first half, firing in a superb strike following a well-worked short corner. The goal showcased the team’s set-piece prowess and gave them a deserved advantage at the interval.

Methody, however, came out with renewed determination after the break and managed to level the score in the second half. Their equaliser ensured a tense finish, with both teams pressing hard for a winner, but the match ended 1-1 after normal time.

With the scores still tied, the contest was decided by a penalty shootout. Both teams displayed remarkable composure under pressure, with the first series ending 3-3, necessitating sudden death.

Banbridge’s goalkeeper, Lucy Sterritt, was outstanding between the posts, making crucial saves to keep her side in contention during the nail-biting shootout. The decisive moment arrived when Maggie Suffern stepped up and coolly converted the winner in sudden death, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Banbridge players and supporters.

This hard-fought victory not only secures back-to-back Ulster Junior Cup titles for Banbridge Academy under-14 girls but also sees them progress to the prestigious June Smith All Ireland Finals, which will take place in Dublin next month.
