Consul General Mr Li Nan Visits Banbridge Academy for Confucius Roadshow
Banbridge Academy had the privilege of welcoming the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Li Nan, on Wednesday 4 March 2026. The visit formed part of the Academy’s hosting of the Confucius Roadshow, an event involving several local primary schools which centres around celebrating Chinese language and culture.
Mr Li Nan and his delegation were greeted by the Principal, Mr McLoughlin OBE, and senior pupils who have participated in the Confucius program. The Consul General was given a brief tour of the school, offering an opportunity to observe the Academy’s ongoing commitment to international learning and cultural exchange.
Mr Li addressed pupils directly, sharing brief remarks that highlighted the importance of global cultural understanding and mutual learning between China and Northern Ireland. His presence added a significant enrichment to a morning of lively cultural activities. As part of his visit, the Consul General donated several boxes of books on Chinese culture to the school library, a gesture warmly received by the Academy community.
Throughout the day, pupils from Bridge Integrated Primary School, Ballydown Primary School, Dromara Primary School, Abercorn Primary School and Edenderry Primary School took part in a range of interactive workshops. Activities included chopstick competitions, handkerchief twirling, jianzi, and creative Key Stage 2 art projects such as dragon‑making, ensuring every child experienced a varied programme.
Mr McLoughlin praised the success of the event, noting that the Consul General’s visit reinforces Banbridge Academy’s commitment to fostering international friendships and promoting cultural literacy among young people. The visit stands as a significant moment in Banbridge Academy’s partnership with the Confucius Institute and marks another milestone in the school’s efforts to broaden educational experiences for pupils across the community.
