Banbridge Academy Celebrates Pupil’s Historic Sailing Success

Banbridge Academy is proud to celebrate an outstanding achievement by Year 12 pupil Adam Green, who has made history by becoming the first Irish sailor to win the ITCA GBR Topper National Series Championship.

Adam, aged 15, secured the prestigious 2025/26 title following an exceptional season competing against more than 140 sailors from across Great Britain. His success is particularly commendable given the dedication required to balance a demanding GCSE programme alongside a busy international sailing schedule.

Throughout the series, Adam demonstrated remarkable resilience, skill and determination. His campaign began at Draycote Water Sailing Club in October 2025, where challenging conditions brought on by Storm Amy tested competitors. Despite difficult travel and strong winds, Adam delivered an excellent performance, achieving his first National Series race win and finishing second overall.

Further strong performances followed, including a sixth-place finish in light-wind conditions at Weymouth and Portland, and a crucial result at Hayling Island in May, where Adam secured two race wins and another second-place finish. These achievements placed him in a commanding position going into the final event at Grafham Water.

At the series finale in June, Adam once again showed consistency and composure, finishing second overall and earning enough points to secure the overall championship title.

Everyone at Banbridge Academy is immensely proud of Adam’s achievement, which reflects not only his personal dedication but also his ability to successfully balance academic commitments with sporting excellence. His accomplishment highlights the strong culture of ambition and perseverance encouraged within the school community.

In addition to his success in the Topper class, Adam is continuing to develop his sailing career by transitioning into the ILCA fleet, competing in events both in Ireland and Great Britain. His ambitions remain high as he aims to defend his Irish National Championship title and further improve on his impressive performances at international level.

Adam’s success is a testament to the support of his family, coaches and the wider sailing community, as well as his own commitment to excellence. Banbridge Academy looks forward to following his continued progress and celebrating future achievements both on and off the water.
