Banbridge Academy’s Emma Stewart Storms to Victory at Home Countries & Celtic Cross Country
Parliament Hill, London — In a commanding display of strength, maturity, and exceptional athletic talent, 16‑year‑old Emma Stewart, a Year 13 pupil at Banbridge Academy, surged to victory in the Women’s U20 race at the Home Countries and Celtic International Cross-Country Championships held at the iconic Parliament Hill on 7 February 2026.
Stewart, who represented Northern Ireland & Ulster, was part of a four‑strong squad selected for the prestigious event on the famously challenging Hampstead Heath course.
The competition formed part of the London Cross Challenge, a major fixture in the UK’s cross‑country calendar and a World Athletics Cross Country Tour Silver event, drawing top junior and senior athletes from across the Home Countries and Celtic nations. The day’s racing featured the traditional mix of steep climbs, energy‑sapping mud, and sprawling views across London—conditions that have made Parliament Hill one of the sport’s most revered courses.
Despite the heavy terrain and the quality of opposition, Stewart delivered a performance of remarkable composure and dominance. Her victory in the U20 race stands as a testament not only to her physical ability but also to her discipline and race intelligence—qualities that have become increasingly apparent as she has risen through the ranks of Northern Irish athletics.
Northern Ireland team officials had noted the strength and promise in Stewart’s selection, with the young athlete having already built a reputation for her tenacity and range across endurance disciplines.
For Stewart, this win not only places her firmly among the most exciting young endurance athletes in the UK and Ireland but also marks a milestone moment for Banbridge Academy, where she is celebrated not only for her athletic talent but also for her character, leadership, and commitment.
Teachers and peers describe her as “a fantastic role model” with “grit and determination to succeed”—attributes fully reflected in her latest achievement, which will inspire younger athletes within the school and beyond.
As the cross-country season continues through the winter, Stewart’s victory positions her strongly for future national and international opportunities. With form, confidence, and momentum firmly on her side, her trajectory looks set only to rise. A remarkable result for a remarkable young athlete!
